The 6 Keys to Unlock the Doors of Eternal Youth

You hold the keys to forever youth and can begin to unlock those doors today. Sarcopenia (age-related loss of skeletal muscle) and dementia can both be kept at bay and favourably influenced in various ways. You're not a victim of predisposed genetics because there are adoptable habits which can change the rate at which you age.

The common perception of aging is quite skewed. As a result of social conditioning, people expect "normal" aging markers and tend to become frail before their time. We are programmed to believe that our eye sight fails, our hearing and surely all components of our body. Limb by limb we expect the dysfunction of our system.

I remember to this day my dad telling me "Wait until you're in your 40's, then your eyes will start to go on you". I don't buy that sh*t though and have identified this belief to be a fallacy; however, if left unchecked this idea could remain at play in the background of my mind until it creates that expected outcome.

Cycling negative thoughts and beliefs when left unchecked, can wreak havoc on your physiology.

The mind is a powerful creator of reality so if you continue to expect the inevitable failure of your body... it will be so. Furthermore people don't use their body enough which most certainly leads to sarcopenia. As Irwin Rosenberg (a Harvard educated medical doctor) put it, in his moment of epiphany:

"I noted then that no decline in age is as dramatic or potentially more significant than the decline in lean body mass"

Irwin Rosenberg

The most common issue at old age is back problems. Life has become more streamlined in this age where lifting with the back has taken a "back"seat. Between the office jobs of today and the tools of convenience available to us we really don't need to do a lot of lifting at all.

At retirement people often have the vision that it's time to rest and not do a whole lot. So with a mind and body that's no longer being challenged, they both start to deteriorate over time. That said, frailty becomes fate.

I remember my late Nana in her 80s needing a walker even to move within her home. She used to say "Ohhh getting old is no fun at all!". I encouraged her into movement and activity vs sitting for hours on end. I keep in mind the old adage: "Use it or lose it" as a truth.

Sadly I felt that she was set in her beliefs that sarcopenia is inevitable but hoped my little nudges could lead to a more active existence. When sarcopenia starts it often leads to even more inactivity due to the loss of muscle mass.

Less muscle = less physical motivation = less activity. This is the vicious cycle that perpetuates until one succumbs to the grave.

Even material items that are not maintained deteriorate. Everything must have upkeep to last.

Robustness can be achieved in both body and mind. The answer is to challenge your mind and body regularly. Adequate rest periods are needed as well for recharging your batteries.

"When you're green you're growing, when you're ripe you rot."

Ray Kroc

In a nutshell: when you stop growing (via challenge) you start to decompose. What can you do about it? This leads us to the 5 keys to remaining youthful for the duration of your lifetime as well as extending it:

1) Exercise - As mentioned, challenge signals growth (strength gains) and without it there's decomposition. Thus to challenge the body is to preserve it's youth and protect from sarcopenia.

Strength training and short intensive bouts of exercise like sprints signal the growth mechanism of muscle; however, engaging in any physical activities that you enjoy (on a regular basis) is a great starting point. Nothing motivates more than to enjoy the activities in which you engage. This is important because maintaining physical health relies on consistency--If you're not enjoying the exercise sessions you'll likely discontinue them sooner than later.

Last summer I rollerbladed quite a bit which I got into because I loved hockey as a youth and always enjoyed the finesse of skating. It was easy for me to keep up the exercise regimen because I enjoyed it so much. Blasting tunes and skating paved walkways/streets. Gold!

Beyond the simple enjoyment of certain exercises there's a particularly effective method of achieving the best physique for your genetics in minimal time spent and that is strength training to failure (High Intensity Training). To learn about this training method you can read my previous newsletter here.

The most effective way to challenge yourself is to face failure. Many shy away from failure in life because we're conditioned that it's a bad thing. Well I'll tell you failure precedes success.

The long term gains accumulated as a result of failure far exceed the temporary defeat.

2) The Mind - We become robust and more equipped for life's challenges from enduring failure even in the mind. All the best athletes in sports that hold records usually have some of the highest failing rates as well because they tried the most.

Fear of failure can often lead to no longer trying new things for the sake of avoiding failure. This leads to stagnant waters. I say "Get out of the swamp of sorrow and ride the renewing river which offers real adventure!"

To step even slightly out of your comfort zone often leads to fresh life experiences. This offers a new found sense of aliveness.

The mind is like a muscle and can be strengthened through exercising it regularly by trying new things and playing the edge of your comfort zone.

 3) Fasting - Inhibiting and reversing aging is also influenced by factors such as fasting. Fasting awakens longevity mechanisms at a genetic level. It enhances gene expressions which have been linked to extending lifespan in multiple mammalian studies.

Fasting enhances a bodily state called autophagy which in short means your body is feeding off it's own tissue to renew itself. That may sound scary, but it's actually a rapid cleanup process.

Old cells become replaced at a faster rate than normal so your bodily tissue becomes renewed steadily while in this state. Tissue health is at the pinnacle of import when it comes to longevity.

 4) Caloric restriction has been linked to longevity according to studies, so quite simply put: eating less lends itself to living longer. An added bonus is aggressive fat loss if that happens to be a personal goal.

 5) Metabolic Typing - Eating according to your body's design is another big player in the game of life lengthening. This offers low stress digestion which equals a higher quality of life. To mitigate stress is to extend life.

People of northern countries where fruits and veggies are scarce are best adapted to eating meat. Those from warm places like Africa where copious amounts of vegetation are available tend to be more adapted to a plant based diet.

I've ate mostly vegetarian my entire life with a several year period of veganism. I was told by my dad as a youth that red meat was generally bad for health. It's also common conditioning to believe that vegetables and fruits make you strong and healthy; however, after a lifetime of digestive issues for me (namely bloating) on a mostly vegetarian diet I began experimenting with various elimination diets and strategies.

It seemed no matter what I did I could not get rid of the bloating issues. It wasn't until I eliminated gluten and high sugar foods that I started to see actual results by recording my belly size and weight over the course of 30 days with notable results.

I'm at a point now where the bloating is minimised but still somewhat present. I recently started reading The Carnivore Diet by Dr. Shawn Baker and currently transitioning into an all meat diet as a means to finally crack the bloating code. The data in his book reveals that people from countries that consume higher amounts of beef live longer than those who consume less meat so I'm sold on giving the diet a full try.

Clearly bloating or any unfavourable signal from the body calls for a change. If you think of a car, when you upkeep it with oil changes and maintenance it lasts much longer than if you ignore the error lights on the dash and fail to correct abnormalities. The body is the same. It tells you when something's up.

6) Carbon 60

Over the course of 6.5 years I have been practising Dr. Nun Amen Ra's longevity protocol. In the beginning I was more in alignment with his protocol because I was vegan. I realised over the years that veganism is not for me nor is it for people who's ancestral lineage comes from northern countries.

Evidently Amen Ra thrives on the vegan diet however he is African american thus his bloodline is more oriented toward living off fruits and vegetables. The metabolic type of people from hot countries is usually geared to the food that's most available (fruits and veggies). It's evident that Amen Ra thrives on this diet since he currently holds the world deadlift record in multiple weight classes as a natural.

Long story short, his protocol involves 12 different isolated amino acids in an elixir drink daily. Over the course of 6.5 years to date I experimented with my own set of supplements and there is one supplement that is now a permanent staple in my life.

That being Carbon 60. It's the most powerful antioxidant I've consumed (175X stronger than Vitamin C). Amen Ra's protocol advocates strongly for antioxidants as a means of living long and well.

It's one of the cornerstones of optimal health. One of the big benefits of Carbon 60 is that it remains in the body for days cleaning up years of toxins that have built up within the body. It also remains active in neutralizing free radicals as they're formed, preventing cellular damage.

Carbon 60 is also recommended by Ramtha the enlightened one. He explains it as being a powerful healer.

The long and short term benefits of C60 are as follows:

  • Anti-aging

  • Anti-viral

  • Acne Relief

  • Increased Hair and nail growth

  • Yeast infection relief

  • Improved stamina and endurance

  • Reduced inflammation

  • Increased alterness

  • Mental clarity

  • Increased motivation

  • Increased libido

  • Boost in energy

  • Improved attitude

  • Improves immunity

Although I've dwindled off most of the isolated amino acids from Amen Ra's protocol this is the single supplement that I will continue to use indefinitely. It comes as a liquid dissolved in olive oil.

If you're interested in picking some up here's the website I order from and if you use code KUSHWOOD you get 10% off (significantly cheaper than ordering from Amazon):

Olive oil itself has been studied and evidence reveals that it's linked to longevity.

Steps to Implement the 5 keys Today:

To find your metabolic type there's a book by William Wolcott called Metabolic Typing which has a quiz and can help you identify your personal type. You'll know what is working via experience and can make adjustments as you go if necessary.

Consume 1 tsp of Carbon 60 daily for maximum antioxidant protection. DNA health is the foundation of well being and C60 optimizes that.

Fasting can be adopted slowly by simply having a set eating window and shortening that window slowly (down to a single hour if desired).

Caloric restriction usually happens naturally as you adopt fasting since you're typically eating for less time. You could otherwise calorie count and slowly cut back starting with 5-10% deficits over a weekly basis until desired weight goals are on track.

Regular exerice is a big part of preventing sarcopenia. Again I talked about effective strength training here in the previous newsletter but as a starting point, any form of enjoyable exercise that you can stay persistent with is a great foundation for a long lived quality existence.

Many times the most challenging part of exercise is to start. So get committed because you will see results in your overall well being... but only with consistency. You'll thank me later.

To tune your mind to longevity can be as simple as being "present". As Eckhart Tolle explains, it is a state of timeless and formless being. When you stop identifying yourself with your thoughts (of past and future) you come into the surrendered state of "being".

We're often in a state of "doing" which typically results in compulsive thinking; however, taking a moment to become truly aware can dissolve all of our problems (which usually only exist in the mind as figments). Problems literally equate to thoughts of the past (stories we tell ourselves) and thoughts of the future (the worry about things that have not and probably will not happen).

Slowing your thoughts, and returning to the rhythm of your breath is a great tool to surrender into "being". There's truly no stress when you are in that state - it's like an awakened meditation. So practise returning to the breath at least once a day.

Lastly (but not least) one of the simplest ways to eternal youth is through thought. By not giving heed to the aging process you opt out of it's processes. Yes, reality is shaped heavily by our thoughts.

“A man is but a product of his thoughts; what he thinks, he becomes.”

Ghandi

Considering that quote we can see that celebrating birthdays as a reminder of being another year older does not serve well. Instead you could imagine getting one year younger starting on your next birthday and start to count the years backwards.

“Whatever the mind can conceive and believe the mind can achieve”

Napoleon Hill

This quote applies to all faucets of life including aging. There are no barriers in no-limit thinking. Thoughts can change you at a cellular level.
